The azalea japonica is best pruned shortly after flowering, in May or June. Do not wait to prune your plant, otherwise you might cut off new buds.

How to prune an azalea

  • Step 1: Carefully cut off dead flowers without damaging the new buds.
  • Step 2: When pruning, follow the azalea’s natural shape.
  • Step 3: From time to time, but definitely not annually, give the azalea a more thorough prune. This rejuvenates the plant and ensures it retains its beautiful shape.
